Weekly Homework Tasks

The following homework tasks should be completed by your child on a weekly basis and handed in to be marked on Friday.

Spelling:  Learn spelling words and complete spelling activity sheet

  • 10 spelling words are given – these contain a spelling pattern or rule.  The activity sheet helps to reinforce and practise the spelling in a variety of ways.  Encourage your child to use the spelling strategy outlined in the back of the spelling notebook when tackling new words.
  • 10 spelling words are chosen by your child – these should come from errors in their own writing, essential spelling list, list words from the child’s spelling level, word bank or topic words (other sources are listed in the Spelling Codes in the front of the spelling notebook – please encourage your child to select words that are a challenge, but should be words they are likely to use in their own writing).  They should write the code to identify the source for the words.  Any errors in the spelling test should be carried over to the following week.
  • Please complete at least 3 checks at home, before Friday.

Reading log:

  • Books are selected by your child at the school library on a weekly or fortnightly basis.  Other options for reading include the daily newspaper, local library books, websites related to the term topic, reading to your child from your home library
  • Please encourage your child to read independently and sign their reading log.  Feel free to enjoy a story together – picture books are for all ages

Maths:  Basic facts and homework sheet

  • A basic facts sheet will be provided for the first part of Term 1.  Your child can time themselves to complete one column each day, Monday – Thursday (focus on speed and accuracy).  Please help your child identify the questions they find difficult and focus on learning these
  • A weekly homework sheet will be given to reinforce and practise the skills and strategies covered in class
