Wilson, Mary

Dear Parents and Caregivers of Baverstock Oaks School

We are now well into week 9 and next week is the final week of term 3.  This term Baverstock Oaks has certainly celebrated much success in sport – rugby, netball, gymnastics as well as speeches, mathex, literature quiz to name a few.  This is testament to our awesome students and the dedication of our staff and parents who teach and coach.  It is a real team effort.  As I write this it reminds me of the old saying – “It takes a village to raise a child.”  This is so true and our school is part of that village for your children along with your wider family and friends.  Together we can support your child be the best the can be.

Planning is well underway for term 4 and beyond.  Each whanau has a planning day to get the term 4 plans completed and to ensure they have the resourcing in place.  I am currently working in 2018 ensuring we have the staff we need to structure the school the best way for the children’s learning.  The more I look into other school organization, the more I realise how well our children are supported.  We certainly put our resources, financial and personnel, where we have identified the need.  As we finalise our school structure for 2018, if you have any requests for your child’s placement please note these requests MUST come to me, not via your child’s current teacher.  They need to be in writing to me, by the end of term 3.

We have come to the end of our Mindfulness teaching in four of our classes over term 3.  We are seeing some major positive changes to children as they develop the skills to slow down and appreciate the moment.  They are realizing the connections they can control with their breathing, emotions and the world around them.  We continue with six more classes next term which will mean we can move into Year 4 and maybe Year 3 next year.  Mindfulness focuses on viewing the world with kindness and curiosity.

This Saturday is our New Zealand General Election and certainly the most exciting politically for quite some time.  Be aware you can vote in our school hall on polling day and there is a large Market Day planned here which should be enticing for our neighbourhood. Come along to the festive occasion, place your vote for our next government and enjoy time at the Market.

Parent Corner: The basics of parenting are pretty simple

Picture2One thing that is very apparent after more than 20 years of parent education is that there are lots of right ways to bring up kids. I reckon there are just a few essentials to parenting and if you get them covered off, I think you can freestyle the rest and things will be just fine. Let’s get it down to two basics – your kids feeling loved and feeling safe. If this is happening, I think you have already got a pass mark as a parent.

Picture1By the way, please note that I didn’t say ‘loving your kids’ was the basic, I said that kids feel loved. I’m sure every parent loves their children, but things get in the way and the child doesn’t always actually feel that love. Maybe it is anger, or discipline that is too harsh, maybe it is too much busyness in the home, perhaps a parent isn’t able to be with the child. Learning new and better ways to show love to your children should be a top task for parents. But I don’t want to over-emphasise the negatives. I want you to catch the positive message – that even with thousands of fantastic parenting books and websites that give good advice (including ours at Parenting Place!), the basics of parenting are simple. If you get love and safety right, it’s amazing how much else you can get ‘wrong’ and still give your kids a great childhood.                       John Cowan

Thanks again for taking the time to be part of our learning journey.  I hope you are regularly enjoying seesaw posts and having conversations with your child about what he/she is learning

Mary Wilson

Do you have or know of any 4 year olds who are zoned for Baverstock Oaks?

paintIf you do please encourage their parents to come and enrol them as soon as possible.  We are trying to forecast numbers for 2018 and need to know who to expect.  We certainly do not have room for out of zone children anymore. It is never too early to enrol.  On or around their 4th birthday is great for us.

School Calendar viewed on phones

download-4After some feedback at the FAB meeting this week we understand there have been some issues viewing our school wide calendar on your phone.  This has now been rectified.  When you go to the “Parent Info” tab on our website you will see under Calendar another tab “Calendar (Mobile Version)” if you select this, the calendar will appear in an agenda format that you can scroll through.  We hope this makes it easier to view upcoming events.

BAVERSTOCK OAKS MARKET DAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2017

unnamedAs part of our fundraising effort, the Baverstock Oaks F.A.B (Friends At Baverstock) team has come up with a new event.
We will be hosting a Market Day at the school. This will be a craft and farmers market style event.
It will be happening on the 23rd of September, 2017 from 10am. This is also ‘election day’ and our school is a voting hub. We thought that it would a great way to maximize our chances of selling with the numbers of people that will be coming in to vote.
We are having vendors from all over Auckland. There will be some great stalls selling food, fruit sauces, jellies, jewellery, snowies, mini donuts, hotdogs, dolls clothes, candles, portraits/photography, kids clothing & accessories, cakes, honey, and soooooo much more
So….. come down and vote and have a great time looking and buying at the stalls  –  a great time to start collecting christmas presents

Dorothy in Wonderland

productionRehearsals for our school production Dorothy in Wonderland are going well with many scenes coming together already which is exciting. With a cast of over 100 children rehearsals have been taking place for the last term and a half and hopefully by week 10 this term we will be word perfect and ready to put on a performance of a lifetime!

The main characters have been working hard learning their lines and the choir have spent many hours learning all the songs for the show. Miss Skipper has been training the choir and cast members with their singing and Mrs Callaghan has been directing the many actors about the stage.  With the help of Mr Tuli managing the large number of children who attend rehearsals each day and Miss Vili teaching the cast their dances, it has been a busy time.

BAVERSTOCK OAKS PAUSE, BREATHE , SMILE PROGRAMME FILMING

Ruckus is currently producing “The Curious Mind” – a NZ On Air funded documentary series for TVNZ1.

The four one hour series explores the science of the brain; including everything from how we feel hate, anger and love all the way through to why it all goes wrong and what we can do about that. With the help of BabyX – the most advanced Artificial Intelligence model on the planet, Nigel Latta will be able to translate complex neuroscience finding into compelling and immediately accessible visual demonstrations.

Ruckus would like to film a Pause, Breath, Smile Mindfulness session with students at Baverstock Oaks on Tuesday 26th September 2017.

This footage will be used in Episode 4 which is all about how we can help ourselves, and improve our brains.

Any parents who DO NOT WISH their children to be filmed, please contact Principal Mary Wilson by Friday 22nd September on 09 278 6741 / [email protected].  The school will then alert the Ruckus crew on the day that these children must not be filmed.

It would be a very small crew of approximately 4 people. Ruckus shoot on a small battery-powered Arri Alexa Mini camera, either handheld or on a tripod. The sound equipment is wirelessly linked to the camera, so there are no cables lying around. The crew are very familiar with shooting active environments & schools without causing any disturbances; they are extremely courteous and discrete.

ABOUT THE SHOW & RUCKUS

Nigel Latta will take us on an incredible journey to explore the science of the brain; including everything from how we feel hate, anger and love all the way through to why it all goes wrong and what we can do about that. With the help of BabyX – the most advanced Artificial Intelligence model on the planet, Nigel will be able to translate complex neuroscience findings into compelling and immediately accessible visual demonstrations.

Each of the four, 1 hour episodes will be themed around fundamental workings of our mind to demonstrate how our brains shape who we are and how we live. Episodes will include Hi-tech lab observations involving Nigel and BabyX, compelling human stories, social experiments and intense mind challenges executed by Nigel.

BabyX is the closest thing to a human that humans have ever built from technology and is the literal brain child of Associate Professor Mark Sagar, Director of the Laboratory for Animate Technologies at the University of Auckland. Baby X will interact and connect with Nigel to relay what emotions actually ‘look like’ in the brain, in real time.

The emphasis in “The Curious Mind” will be on showing people both the wonder of what it means to be human, but also in combining the elements above in a way that engages viewers, and teaches them real and meaningful things about both themselves, and the people around them. The result will equip viewers with the knowledge and information to make changes in their own lives, so that they too can reach their full potential or make changes in their family or work place.

Combining his two great passions – psychology and science – Nigel will take viewers on an incredible journey that brings to life the hidden miracles of the human mind and will help shape our understanding on what we can achieve, if we just put our mind to it.

Ruckus was formed by Nigel Latta, Arwen O’Connor and Mitchell Hawkes in 2015. Collectively the founding partners have over 60 years’ experience in the industry working on a broad range of productions. The strength of the company lies in the team at its core. Ruckus might be new, but it’s built from a solid foundation of impressive industry experience. Ruckus is all about putting everything on screen. We only make stuff we really care about, and we only make stuff we think can really make a difference in the world. Fundamentally we

believe that television is a powerful medium for positive change in the world.

Most recently ‘Mind Over Money’ took what was essentially a television series about the things people usually talk about with their accountants, and made this material into top rating, talked about, accessible primetime content, winning its time-slot against the established brands ‘My Kitchen Rules’ and ‘The Block Australia’.

The Howick Historical Village

On Monday, 11 of September, Upper E whanau from Baverstock Oaks School travelled on a bus to visit the Howick Historical Village located in the Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. We went on the trip to make connections with the past terms to the present term.

At the village we saw many exhibits and enjoyed various activities such as;

  • A Court Case, which was like a play based on a minor court case.

  • Parlour Games, which involved many strategies and required a haul of teamwork.

  • A Schoolroom in 1850, it wasn’t a place every child wanted to be because if you stepped out of line you would get smacked with a cane

There was also an activity where there was a massive block of wood which was tied to a piece of rope and the challenger would have to test your strength. You would have to lift the block of wood up to you, and if you win…  you know that you have completed the challenge and you get to walk away victorious. If you didn’t then you would just have to get stronger and come back for a rematch.

Another thing that occurred was that the managers of Howick Historical Village had put in eerie features to show that in the past there were a few scary things happening every now and then. So make sure if you’re wondering about going back in time, remember, Howick Historical Village scary features. Also, watch out for school teachers and their canes.

Year 6 Learning

The Year 6 students in Upper E block have been learning about the process involved in creating a product, testing, carrying out research, advertising and selling at a market.  On Friday 15 September the students held their Market Day to see how successful their inquiry had been.  There was an excited buzz in the air as the students set up their stalls and prepared for their customers in the Upper E awhina space.  The Market Day was declared ‘open’ and the students worked collaboratively to sell their wares.  Over the next two weeks the students will be evaluating how successful their product was, based on the amount of money made, what went well, what didn’t go well, and what they would do differently next time.

Room 28 and their Magic Beans

In Room 28 we planted our magic beans and our house magically turned into a gingerbread house covered in lollipops.  We made our own houses with icing and sprinkles.  We also described the gingerbread house.  Here is some of our writing.

Epro8

On Friday 8 September, eight students participated and represented B.O.S. in the Vector Epro8 challenge. Prior to the actual Epro8 Challenge there were two trials to see who would go through to the challenge. On the day we had two hours and 30 minutes to complete the challenge. We had four challenges to choose from. There was a Robotic Guard Dog, a Light to Shine at a Satellite, an Amusement Park Ride and a Bridge. It was very challenging and fun at the same time. Well done to our Baverstock teams:

Baverstock Busters – Angela Clark, Aryan Asre, Adam Zhong and Xavier Jones

Baverstock Buccaneers – Jaden Chung, Keiran Hicks, Aryan Patel and Chhaioung Ly.

Interschool Cross Country

On a track that looked more like a mud run than an interschool cross country course, our Baverstock Oaks team competed in the Interschool Cross Country Competition last Tuesday 12th September.  Even though they were ankle deep in mud most of the time, all of our students gave it their all and ran a fantastic race. Well done to all of our team, in particular Ayaan Lambat who placed 3rd in her Year 4 girls race.

The semi final for the HPPA Rugby Competition played at Lloyd Elsmore Park on the 8th of September will be remembered as one of the truly great games of recent times.

Both teams were very well prepared and knew their game.

It was an extraordinary arm wrestle throughout the game with 3 tries each at half time, the score being 21 – 19 to Shelly Park.  The 2nd half saw Baverstock Oaks balance the game with 14 points to Shelly Park’s 12.  Meaning the game was drawn at 33 all.
The teams went into extra time with 7 minutes each way.  At the end of the extra time both teams had scored 2 converted tries.  This meant that gain the scores were locked at 47 each.
It was decided to rematch the game for the following Monday.  Very unfortunately, having battled hard on the Friday, Baverstock Oaks was overwhelmed in the second game with a large loss of 49 – 0.  We know that there is much to learn from this.  We now look forward to the 3rd and 4th place final game later in the term.
