Samoan language week
During week 5 we celebrated Samoan language week and explored Coconut Farms in Samoa as we continue our focus on ‘Farm to fork’. We watched some youtube clips on how a chief in Samoa dehusks the coconut and makes coconut milk. Then we tasted some coconut water, cream and ate some coconut. We learned so much.
Navika Prasad Y5 Rm 30 shared how her grandparents had a coconut tree in Fiji and decided to do some research herself and wrote an information report on coconuts.
Coconuts are fruits found in tropical countries like Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.
Some are very tall growing up to 30 metres tall and some varieties are as short as 1 metre. There are no branches on the tree. The leaves only appear on the top of the trees. It is difficult to climb on tall trees. since there are no branches. People use the leaves to make baskets, mats, and brooms. The husks can be used to make furniture and rugs.
The fruit is either green or yellow on the tree. The colour changes to brown when they are ripe. The ripe coconuts fall off the tree when they are brown. They are used to make oil and coconut meal used for feeding animals. The cream from the coconuts is packed in tins and used in making different kinds of foods. The water in the coconut is used for drinking. The shredded dried coconut is packed in packets and sold. The coconut shell is used to make many kinds of art and crafts like bowls and buttons.
A coconut plant is ready to bear fruit after three years and can keep on bearing fruit for more than 30 years.
Butter making fun
We have learned how cows are able to turn grass into creamy healthy milk. We decided to make our own milk using cream. Why don’t you have a go at making butter at home with your child, as they are now experts!
