Dear Parents and Caregivers of Baverstock Oaks School

Greetings, Kia ora, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Bula vinaka, Malo e lelei, Talofa lava, Taloha, Kia orana, Ni hao, Buenos dias, Chao, Malo ni, Habari dobar dan, Namaste, Salam.

Firstly, a big thank you for all the support we have had from our community as we negotiate Covid and do our very best to keep the school open and quality teachers working with your children.  Our staff have appreciated the positive messages, monetary donations, morning teas,  supplies of masks and sanitiser provided by a few of our families.  You have all shown a true sense of family and I know our staff certainly appreciate your generosity.

Staffing Update

I would like to take this opportunity to also thank all of our staff for their commitment over the past few weeks.  Some have been isolating and working from home and those at school have picked up extra duties and extra students in their class.  Our Akonga Rerēketanga staff have also supported, by taking on classes when teachers are away meaning no year group has had to stay at home, so thank you.

Sadly at the end of this term we farewell Ms Jackie Marriner.  Jackie has been an integral part of our Reception classroom for the last 2 and half years. Jackie and her husband are relocating up to Whangarei to be closer to whānau.  We wish her all the best in her new adventure.

We welcome a very experienced teacher to this position, Mrs Sarah Hsu who has been a junior teacher at Point View School for the last 15 years and will be taking Jackie’s place in reception and will be the whānau leader in the Year 1 team.  I know Sarah brings much experience and we are delighted to welcome her into the Baverstock Oaks family.

We also welcome two new Learning Assistants to our staff, Katrina Gardiner and Karen Peat.

A big welcome to the new students and families who have joined our school. We look forward to making strong connections with you all.   Hopefully next term we’ll be able to hold our pōwhiri to formally welcome you all to our place.

Child Absences

Thank you to those parents who let us know when their child is going to be away, this makes it much easier for our office staff who, for health and safety reasons, have to contact you if your child is away and we don’t know the reason.

Staff Professional Development

A reminder throughout 2022 there will be three Staff Only Days that the Government provides to ensure our staff keep up to date with current practices.  Please make a note of these days as the school will be closed for instruction:

Friday 3 June Kahui Ako staff Only Day
Thursday 7 July
Tuesday 25 October

I look forward to catching up with you over the next few weeks.

Online Parent Teacher Interviews

Please note: children will not be required at school from 12.30pm on this day.
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Thursday 24 March from 1.00 – 8.00pm

These will be conducted online or via phone this year, due to the current Covid restrictions.

To book an interview, go to: School Interviews

  • Enter School Event Code: ubynp
  • Ensure you supply an email address and complete all the relevant personal details.
  • Select an interview timeslot
  • If your child attends Learning Support, ESOL or Extension classes you can book a time to see these teachers as well

These interviews are NOT FOR RECEPTION CLASSES (Rm 2 & Rm 3).  These are done when your child moves from Reception to their new class later in the year.
These interviews are an opportunity for the adults in a child’s learning journey to discuss how things are working for the child’s learning this year. It is an opportunity for parents to highlight any at-home issues the teacher needs to be aware of and also how he/she has settled to learning in their new class for the year.

These interviews will be led by both parent/s and the teacher to ensure there is honesty around the child and his/her learning and clear identification of the necessary steps that need to be implemented.

We strongly encourage you to make an appointment to ensure there is effective communication between school and home and this is a very important part of forming a strong learning partnership for the year.  We look forward to sharing this important opportunity with our Baverstock Oaks families.

Do you have a child turning 5 in the next 6-12 months?

Heights Junior College Board of Trustee Elections
We will be asking for nominations to the School Board of Trustees later this year. This committee is an important element in the long term success of the school and we seek parents who are prepared to make a significant commitment to the school for this term of office 2022-2025 and possibly beyond. In the past we have enjoyed  representation which reflects our rich cultural diversity on our Board and seek a Māori voice in particular to ensure we honour our treaty obligations in a meaningful way.
Parents/caregivers who have property, legal, HR and financial expertise and/or have served on other Boards are encouraged to apply.
If you need any information about the Board, its role and individual responsibilities please contact Sian Grant Board Presiding Member: [email protected] or the Principal Ian Morrison: [email protected]
