We are aware that speaking in front of others is a skill that all people need. Many adults have this as an integral part of their job. The earlier we can teach our children these skills the better. We are also aware that not all children feel comfortable speaking in front of others especially when they have to write their own speech.
To develop confidence in speaking in front of others, during Term 3 our Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students participate in our Oral Reading competition. This is a great way to build children’s confidence and set high expectations.
In Term 3, we then have our school Speech Competition and students in Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 all participate in their class competition with the winners going through to the school finals. The winner of this then goes on to represent our school in the Howick and Pakuranga interschool competition.
From time to time we will also have students represent Baverstock Oaks in different languages when there is a local competition e.g. Hindi or Cantonese
